About Me

My photo
Atlanta, Georgia, United States
She slid onto the swing dance floor wearing a burnt yellow and brown snowsuit from the 1990s, helmet, ski goggles, and socks. Oblivious to the excess pant legs under her feet, she grabbed a goofy dancer and flew into a jitterbug while the sister she had only met 4 times in her life took blurry pictures with an old iPhone. Dancing in a new city 1400 miles from home, borrowing snowsuits from strangers, long-lost sister taking weird photos of you and going skiing for a week - who contains that kind of excitement? Not me!

Sewing

I started sewing when I was 9. My mom was making several Halloween costumes and I was fascinated by the process. I immediately went to the library to learn what I could, but my mom was by far the best teacher I had for many years. I'm currently enrolled in 16 Craftsy.com classes. My favorites are: "Patternmaking Basics: The Skirt Sloper", "Pant Construction Techniques", "Fashion Draping", and "The Couture Dress". I'm also excited to finish a couple garments so I can start on one of my bag making classes, since I think those will be particularly useful as far as integrating technology and fabrics goes, and learning how to work with new materials.

Note to self: I need to add video of the pants I made with LEDs controlled by a mercury switch in 2011, and the LED cat vest I made for a Wearable Technology class in 2012.
Just the kind of thing that got me sewing in the first place

We had a couple hours to put something together for a photo demonstrating our course project. We made this robot and my goofy outfit!

Astra Starr alien doll art project in 2011. The assignment in my art class was to create something to leave out in the world. I created this alien doll out of gold lame (you should have seen the mockups. Horrifying things.). With it, I wrote a in the first page of a notebook that attached to it. I explained that its name was Astra Starr and he/she/it was visiting Earth to learn what it meant to be human. I directed the finder to Astra Starr's Facebook page to post pictures teaching Astra what it meant to be human to them. I passed Astra around a group of friends to get the ball rolling before setting him/her/it free in the wild. That was successful, but once he/she was free in the world, we never heard from him/her again.

I realize I need to work on my lighting and garment photography. I made those pants from a beautiful wool in 2011.

This here was my first attempt matching polka dots and fashion fabric design elements during the pattern cutting process. It was also my first long back zipper, so I was pretty proud when everything aligned. 2009.

I ordered Tula Pink fabric to make this skirt in 2009. I spent many hours looking for matching contrast fabric and trim and altering the lace underneath. A friend wanted to use it for a photoshoot, hence the picture above.

I can get a little carried away sometimes. This was my second pair of pants, first real success with a zipper fly thanks to my mom's help in 2006.

My first pair of pants that I made as part of a sewing class. The teacher was a bit confused by the zipper construction, but my good ol' mom chimed in and fixed it. She refused to admit she knew more than a professional seamstress, however.

Matched up the stripes!

In 2003, I made a corseted prom dress I wore to prom and a dress for Halloween. Alas, I didn't have a digital camera back then and don't have photos now.
